Sri Lanka will take on Australia in first of three Test-Match Series at home turf starting on Tuesday (26 July) at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele.
Fixture: Sri Lanka vs Australia, 1st Test Match/ SL vs AUS
Time/Date: 10:00 AM IST/ 04:30 AM GMT/ 10:00 AM LOCAL/ 26 Jul – 30 Jul
Venue: Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele
Visitors achieved comprehensive victory against Sri Lanka Board XI thanks to Steve O’Keefe who was star player of the match. Steve O’Keefe took 10 wickets and also he was top scorer with unbeaten 78 runs. Aussies look confidence under Steven Smith who looks to dominate host who are struggling to back in winning ways.
Australia have only three players who visited island nation last time Nathan Lyon and Shaun Marsh, who were making their debuts, and Usman Khawaja. Though David Warner was in the squad but he didn’t play. Joe Burns, opening batsman scored 72 runs while Adam Voges also played a decent knock of 43 runs.
Visitors have bunch of fast bowlers led by Mitchell Starc and followed by Nathan Coulter-Nile, Josh Hazlewood. Steve O’Keefe who bagged 10 wickets in the practice game is expected to partner Nathan Lyon.
Meanwhile, host will look to perform better on home soil after humiliating defeat against English men recently. They have included four uncapped players in the squad which clearly shows how dented they are after departure of duo legend Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardana. They were among top five leading run scorer list when Australia visited Sri Lanka last time in 2011.
Sri Lanka have problems of their own mostly in relation to bowling; pace bowlers Dhammika Prasad, Dushmantha Chameera and spinner Jeffrey Vandersay are out due to injury while Shaminda Eranga has been suspended for an illegal action.
Their absence will put enormous strain on veteran spinner Rangana Herath who did not have the best of times in England. With 304 wickets from 70 Tests, Herath is their main weapon and if Sri Lanka are to give some sort of contest to the Australians, he will need to be in top form.
