Virat double ton and Ashwin all-round heroics helped India clinch first test

India won the first test of four test-match Series beating West Indies comprehensively by an inning and 92 runs to take 1-0 lead. This test match saw double-century from skipper Virat Kohli who led the team from front. A lot of credit goes to fast bowlers especially Umesh Yadav and Mohammad Shami, who bowled with discipline in first innings.

Having gone wicket-less in first innings despite bowling well, Ashwin came into his own devouring West Indies’ middle order to hasten the end, he scored a century and he took 7 wickets in the process.


India won the toss and chose to bat first on Caribbean soil in Antigua. Murali Vijay departed early when the score on the board was 14 runs but Shikhar Dhawan played with patience as he scored 84 runs of 147 balls against his nature of play.

Virat Kohli once against displayed his class and smashed double century to put India in comfortable position. He was exception along with Ravichandran Ashwin who scored brilliant century (113 runs of 253 balls). West Indies wound were salted when Amit Mishra scored quick half-century along with wicket-keeper batsman Wriddhiman Saha (88-balls 40).

Devendra Bishoo and Kraigg Brathwaite was successful bowlers who claimed three wickets each. Shannon Gabriel gave Caribbean first breakthrough inform of Murli Vijay early in the inning in seventh over. Bowlers failed to take 10 wickets which allowed India post huge total of 566 for loss of 8 wickets.

West Indies chasing the total, kept losing wickets at regular interval. However, Kraigg Brathwaite played solid and composed inning of 74 runs off 218 balls. Rest of the batsman surrendered before Mohammad Shami who bowled brilliantly. Shane Dowrich resisted giving his wicket and remained unbeaten on 57 runs when West Indies finished their first inning at 243 runs.

Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav were sensational with their accurate line and length. They bowled good bouncers to trouble Caribbeans which is something unusual. Amit Mishra took two wickets while Ravichandran Ashwin and Ishant Sharma remained wicket-less.

India forced follow-on, West Indies lost Kraigg Brathwaite early when he was given LBW of Ishant Sharma. Host went through similar situations once again in second innings kept losing wickets and failed to build partnerships. Marlon Samuels is only batsman who scored half-century and Jermaine Blackwood conceded ducks in consecutive innings. Carlos Brathwaite and Devendra Bishoo frustrated Indians when things looked so close as they together put up 95 runs partnership to delay first test defeat.

Ravichandran Ashwin bagged 7 wickets to break any confidence left in West Indies camp after first innings where they were crumbled before Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav.
