England came back harsh at visitors to win second and third test after Pakistan claimed historic first test win at Lords. However, they couldn’t carry on their dominance and lost last test by handsome margin of 10 wickets which may have surprised host but no credits taken from visitors, they were fantastic throughout the series.
Failure of Alex Hales during test series may be matter of concern for the team because he scored only 145 runs in eight innings which definitely unjustify his ability. He needs to pull up his socks and put a great deal of efforts to lay good foundation for middle order.
Joe Root has always been impressive whenever he has taken stance in the middle. He was at top of leading run-scorer chart with 512 runs in eight innings including one century and two half-century. Eoin Morgan will lead the English side who himself is good player who can bail team out of difficult situations.
Conundrum for England would be wicket-keeper selection as Jonny Bairstow and Jos Butler are available for One-Day Series. Jonny Bairstow was third in highest run-scorer list with 366 runs in seven innings while Jos Butler has been regular performer in 50-overs format. Host have good combination of batsman, bowlers and all-rounders which provide flexibility in batting order. Ben Stokes was good on Final day of NatWest T20 Blast so he will be expected to deliver in same fashion.
David Willey returned to the the squad after he was ruled out of One-Day series due to hand injury which is a grea news for English side. Pace bowling attack will be led by Chris Woakes follow by fast bowler Mark Wood who left brilliant impression in England domestic cricket.
Pakistan comes into this series with win over Ireland. Pakistan were to play two-match ODI series with Ireland interim of Test Series and One-Day Series with England which they won 1-0 because second match suffered washout due continuous rain. Pakistan have played fabulous cricket since they visited England and then to Ireland for Short ODI series.
Double Century from veteran Younis Khan in last test and fantastic century from captain Misbah-ul-Haq in first test is highlights for Pakistan success in test series in England so far with bat while Yahsir Shah excellent spell in first match where he registered 10 wickets to his name to hand Pakistan 75 runs victory.
Now, Pakistan have different sets of players led by Azhar Ali for One-Day International series. Sharjeel Khan played sensational knock in first match against Ireland where he smashed 152 runs off just 86 balls. Shoib Malik and Muhammad Nawaz played half-century knock to help Pakistan reach 337 runs which looked like climbing mountain for Ireland in rain curtailed game of 47 overs.
Imad Wasim is fine addition into Pakistan squad as he could be key player for One-Day Series. He took five wickets in 1st ODI against Ireland to destroy Irish batting line-up. Muhammad Amir did fair job in test series as he took 12 wickets in four matches.
These two team have played each other 76 ODI matches in which England have won 45 while Pakistan won 29 matches with two of them ended without any result. Head to Head encounter definitely favors the host but it will be interesting to see if Pakistan can replicate their performance in One-Day series.
